Police arrested 30 drivers for suspected drunken driving between Oct. 8 and Sunday; five were involved in traffic accidents.

Police have made 1,123 suspected DUI arrests this year compared with 1,163 during the same period in 2011, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

South Hilo officers arrested 19 motorists and Kona officers arrested five while Puna officers arrested three drivers and South Kohala officers arrested two, according to police. Hamakua officers arrested one driver.

There have been 1,140 major accidents this year compared with 1,083 during the same period last year.

As of Sunday, there were 32 traffic fatalities on Big Island public roadways, compared with 16 fatalities during the same period in 2011, according to police. Police say eight of those fatalities were related to drugs, four to alcohol and 10 to a combination of alcohol and drugs.
